Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages department at Joseph Rowntree School.

Here at Joseph Rowntree School students study French and German.

Our students begin in Year 7 with either French or German and are taught in form groups. At the beginning of Year 8 most students start their second foreign language and both French and German are then taught until at least the end of year 9, when students are able to make their choices for GCSE courses.

We are fortunate at Joseph Rowntree School to have highly qualified and motivated teachers of French and German who are able to enthuse the students with their love of their subject and their excellent specialist knowledge and teaching skills. As a Technology college facilities in languages classrooms enable teachers to use up-to-date teaching resources and equipment.

Learning a foreign language is not only about being able to communicate with those whose Mother tongue is different from ours, but also about learning to understand other cultures and other people and being able to discover new pleasures. In a truly European climate we can cross barriers and meet others whether for fun, holidays or wider job opportunities.

The Languages department is committed to fostering interest in other countries and has two well-subscribed exchanges of very long standing to France and Germany. To find out more, please go to the entry for Exchanges
